the city is definitely bigger than arkham city, and the more open design feels much more natural and free flowing. i think that the developers were actually able to incorporate the dynamic weather into the game. in arkham city, the rain was always falling, and there were some days where it was cold, and other days where it was sunny. in arkham knight, the rain is more realistic, and it also seems to react to the player and environment a lot more. as a result, it feels more like the weather is actually affecting your gameplay experience.
the game also features some optional side missions, and i dont mean the side missions that you can do in other batman games. rather, the optional side missions are taken from some of the most famous batman villains. for example, there is a side mission where you have to rescue mr. freeze. in arkham city, the same thing happened, and it wasnt quite as interesting, and the combat wasnt quite as fun.
which, when you have a games-publishing company with an established history of quality, is the exact opposite of a problem. which, to be honest, is probably why people will still have such faith in the arkhamverse, because when their favourite studio does well they don’t screw it up. but then, they’ve been doing well, as evidenced by the fact that we have the batman arkham trilogy, and it’s always been a quality batman story as well.
spoiler alert: i hate the combat. yes, i know, batman is a vigilante and that’s how he gets his kicks, but batman fights with his fists. he has two fists. he doesn’t have a gun, and that’s a bit of a problem. yes, you can grapple, punch and punch in the air, but i don’t know if it’s realistic to be punching someone just to knock them off a ledge and strangle them with the rope, or to be punching someone in the face just to knock them off a ledge and strangle them with the rope. yes, i know i can use a batarang, but if you’re punching someone and you throw a batarang, you can’t just get it back and continue punching them with it, and vice versa. i’m aware that this is a video game, and it’s a comic book game, and it’s meant to be a bit more realistic than a superhero game that’s only been going for 10 years or so, but this just doesn’t feel right. the combat feels like it was made for the arkhamverse, rather than the series as a whole. it’s not a bad thing, it’s just something that will be a bit hard to get used to.
now, can we talk about how the game looks. its lovely. its glorious. the game looks amazing, and has some of the best graphical effects in the batman universe, which, of course, is a pretty high bar to clear. the arkham games have always looked great – arkham city was especially gorgeous – but batman: arkham knight just looks fantastic. there is a number of reasons for this, not least of which is the fact that theyre using a new engine, which has been rebuilt from scratch. the game looks fantastic from the moment you boot it up, and that doesnt change over the course of the campaign.
as for the story, it picks up right after the events of batman: arkham origins. batman has been involved in a bitter battle with the joker, who has escaped from arkham and is wreaking havoc. while arkham city was a rather stylised, muted city, gotham is a much bigger place, and has plenty of different types of districts, such as the docklands, the alleys, the various criminal gangs’ territories and the police station. the game features a lot of different gameplay styles, such as jumping from building to building, exploring the alleys and the rooftops, and also vehicular combat. these missions are all narrated by the very excellent kevin conroy, who is more than capable of keeping up with this game’s dialogue, and also provides a few non-plot related anecdotes, such as the fact that he has a huge collection of batman memorabilia and keeps his batman costume in a wardrobe. batman also has two new gadgets – the wind blast, which can be used to throw bats, and the ability to create a ramp out of a large tree, which is fantastic for vehicular combat.
